Fried Green Tomatoes

I had one of the best days ever this week!  It started out with two lovely Master Gardener volunteers sharing their knowledge about gardening and life with some of our residents at Florence Crittenton. I was able to spend extra time with the volunteers after class and learned about how to propagate basil and mint, a book that everyone needs to read, and which Asian Market was the best to visit in Charlotte.  I had a fabulous time and was really inspired by these amazing women.  One of them especially seems to just exude knowledge and wisdom with every word she says!  She's almost 3 times my age, but with her energy and spirit you would never know it.

During the class, a few of our residents mentioned that they wanted Fried Green Tomatoes, so that afternoon we made them.  It was awesome!  I had about 5 or 6 ladies with me in the kitchen and we had our own little slicing, seasoning, flouring, egg washing, and breading assembly line going on.  We used Brandywine Heirloom Tomatoes that we grew from seeds and they turned out perfectly!  I was in heaven.  Not only did we make something delicious that everyone was proud of, but our ladies who have been going through so much were smiling, laughing and having a good time.  I'm hoping that this will be a memory they carry with them and pass on to their children.  Here's the recipe.
